Laifa: Born from the Continuation of Love, Legacy, and Perseverance
Originating from a small town in Melaka, Laifa was founded by the father of current second-generation successor, Mr. Chan. In its early days, Laifa was nothing more than a humble roadside stall. Mr. Chan’s father would work from sunrise to sunset, tirelessly transporting durians from the orchard to the stall. His deep knowledge of every durian variety and his meticulous care for the trees left a profound mark on young Ray Chan, planting the seed of passion that would one day flourish.
During school holidays, Mr. Chan, as the eldest son, would stay with his father in the orchard, helping to tend to the trees. He fondly recalls the fragrant aroma of durians filling the air, the golden sunlight filtering through the leaves, and listening closely to his father’s teachings while resting in his embrace. Over time, like a well-nurtured seed, that memory grew into a deep-rooted mission: to elevate his father’s small stall into something far greater, to spread the brand, Laifa.
After years blood, sweat and tears, Mr. Chan decided to honor his father’s legacy and became the second-generation owner of Laifa. With bold vision and determination, he transformed the brand from a modest street stall into an innovative, growing enterprise. Beyond just selling premium durians, he began exploring new possibilities by experimenting with processed durian products that eventually gained international acclaim.
His most successful creation, the Durian Puree Stick, was exported to countries such as Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Macau, the UK, Australia, Canada, and the Philippines. Thanks to his strict dedication to quality, Laifa Kee became the first local Malaysian durian brand to break into the international frozen dessert market.
“I race against myself every day,” Ray Chan once said.
In a fast-evolving world, maintaining uniqueness and competitiveness in the global ice cream space is no small feat. Mr. Chan continue to innovate, launching new durian products such as durian gift sets, mooncakes, and the viral “Double Durian Puree Stick” made famous in China as the perfect gift “for someone you love.” With a fresh global perspective, he aligned the brand with international tastes while staying rooted in his Malaysian heritage.
Even as Laifa makes waves internationally, Mr. Chan remains grounded in his father’s values — to bring the best durians to the world, uphold quality, and never forget their humble beginnings.
In 2025, under Mr. Chan’s leadership, Laifa expanded its footprint with two durian-themed restaurants in Melaka and Kwai Chai Hong, Kuala Lumpur, both adorned with rich Nyonya-inspired interiors. The Melaka flagship store even received the honor of being inaugurated by the Governor of Melaka, with a grand event that attracted wide attention. The specially crafted Nine-Grid Durian Dessert Platter served that day later became the restaurant’s signature dish and a fan favorite.
Today, Laifa has grown beyond its early roots, backed by a strong team and bold brand philosophy. With innovation, persistence, and a heart full of gratitude, Mr. Chan leads Laifa into the future, holding fast to its values while seizing every opportunity the world offers.
